Background of the Study

Hypothermia, defined as a core body temperature below 36°C, is a common and preventable complication during surgery, particularly in long or invasive procedures. Surgical patients are at increased risk of hypothermia due to the exposure to cold operating room environments, anesthesia, and the body's inability to regulate temperature effectively during surgery (Bello et al., 2024). Hypothermia can lead to various complications, including increased risk of infection, delayed wound healing, and cardiovascular instability. Nurses play a pivotal role in preventing and managing hypothermia during surgery through the use of warming techniques and careful monitoring of the patient’s temperature (Elhassan et al., 2023).

In Kogi State, where healthcare facilities may face challenges in terms of resources and infrastructure, it is essential to evaluate how effectively nurses are implementing hypothermia prevention strategies. The role of nurses in monitoring body temperature, using warming devices, and educating surgical teams about temperature management is critical to ensuring patient safety. This study aims to assess the extent to which nurses in Kogi State healthcare facilities are involved in preventing hypothermia among surgical patients and identify the challenges they face in implementing effective temperature management protocols.

Statement of the Problem

Hypothermia is a preventable complication during surgery, but its occurrence remains a concern in many healthcare facilities, including those in Kogi State. Despite the critical role of nurses in managing patient temperature, the effectiveness of their interventions in preventing hypothermia has not been sufficiently explored in this context. This study will evaluate the role of nurses in preventing hypothermia in surgical patients and examine the challenges they face in implementing prevention strategies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in preventing hypothermia in surgical patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities.
  2. To identify the factors that contribute to hypothermia during surgery in Kogi State healthcare facilities.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of current warming interventions used by nurses in preventing hypothermia in surgical patients.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in preventing hypothermia among surgical patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities?
  2. What are the main factors contributing to hypothermia during surgery in Kogi State healthcare facilities?
  3. How effective are current warming interventions employed by nurses in preventing hypothermia in surgical patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Kogi State healthcare facilities play a significant role in preventing hypothermia during surgery through monitoring and the use of warming interventions.
  2. Factors such as inadequate warming equipment, lack of training, and environmental conditions contribute to the occurrence of hypothermia in surgical patients in Kogi State.
  3. The use of warming devices and regular monitoring of patient temperature are effective strategies for preventing hypothermia in surgical patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of nurses in preventing hypothermia during surgery in Kogi State healthcare facilities. Limitations may include resource constraints and the challenge of obtaining accurate data from all relevant healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Hypothermia: A medical condition where the body temperature drops below 36°C, often a risk during surgery.
  • Perioperative Nursing: Nursing care provided to patients before, during, and after surgery.
  • Warming Interventions: Measures taken to prevent or treat hypothermia, such as the use of heating blankets or intravenous fluids.
